Several members took advantage of a training opportunity presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension on manure pit rescue. This program was brought to St. Lawrence County through the hard work of Patrick Ames, Executive Director, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County. The training, put on by the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS), provides emergency responders with the basic knowledge needed to respond to an emergency involving a manure pit. Instructor Dan Neenan, NECAS Director, provided a classroom training session, followed by a hands on session with the NECAS Manure Pit Rescue training trailer. The training was very informative and relevant to the response areas of those departments attending. A tour of the Five Mile Farm nearby, allowed participants to see different types of manure pits in a farm operation and learn about how they are constructed and used. A sincere thanks goes out to Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, Five Mile Farm, NECAS, the Lisbon Fire Department, and the various sponsors that made this training possible. Emergency responders from Lisbon, Canton, Potsdam, West Potsdam, Brier Hill, Morristown, Star Lake, Richville, Gouverneur, and Rennselaer Falls took advantage of this training event.
