At 1749 hours, Canton Fire, Canton Rescue, and County Car 4 were dispatched to a reported kitchen fire at 11 Farmer Street. Chief McGregor arrived shortly thereafter and confirmed a working fire in the 1 1/2 story wood frame residence. Engine 6 was enroute at 1754, arriving on scene 3 minutes later with Engine 8, Rescue 1, Tower 1, and Rescue 36 arriving subsequently. Members were met with a heavy volume of fire on the first floor. Three handlines were placed in operation as well as large diameter hose to the nearest hydrant. The bulk of the fire was knocked down within 20 minutes. Due to the age and construction of the house, there were many hidden pockets of fire which required extensive overhaul operations. Mutual aid for interior firefighters was requested from Potsdam Fire and West Potsdam Fire. The residents were home at the time of the fire and escaped unharmed. The cause of the fire is under investigation by members of the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team. Twenty three members responded and all units were back in service at 2300 hours.
