A house fire in the village, at 5 State Street, claimed the life of one individual. Canton Fire, Canton Rescue, and County Car 4 were dispatched at 0108 hours to a reported house fire with entrapment. Engine 6 was enroute at 0114, arriving on scene a minute later to find a 2 story apartment house with heavy fire in the rear of the building and a report of a subject in the rear apartment. Members immediately stretched a handline to the rear and began applying water to the fire in an attempt to gain access and search for the victim. As additional members arrived on scene with Tower 1, Rescue 1, and Engine 8, additional lines were stretched, water supply established, and ventilation performed. Members of the St. Lawrence County Sheriffs and the New York State Police assisted in stretching handlines in the early stages of the fire. Initial responding personnel were able to knock down the fire in the rear apartment and gain entry to search for the occupant. The victim was subsequently located and determined to be deceased. Chief McGregor requested mutual aid from Potsdam Fire for interior personnel. Tower 1 was set up and vertical ventilation performed on the roof. A secondary search was completed on the rest of the building and no other victims were located. Fire investigators from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control were requested by Chief McGregor to assist in determining the cause and origin of the fire. Three investigators, along with a K-9 Brew, responded and spent the night processing the scene. All units were back in service at 0857 hours. The identity of the victim has not been released and the fire remains under investigation. |
