Tower Ladder 1 Catches 2 Story Job in Dekalb

By Firefighter/AEMT-CC Eric Walraven
November 21, 2010

At Around Midnight Saturday night, Canton Fire was dispatched by St Lawrence County Central Dispatch for a special request for Tower Ladder 1 and Manpower to respond to a reported Fully Envolved structure fire at 30 School Street in Dekalb Junction per the request of Dekalb Junction Fire Command. Within just a few minutes Tower 1 and Engine 8 were on the road. As units approached the Town of Dekalb and Canton lines, a large column of smoke and a visible glow of fire was seen as firefighters began preparing for an-all nighter. Upon the arrival of Canton Fire units, a large 2 story wood frame structure was found with heavy fire pushing from the 2nd floor and venting through the roof, as Dekalb Junction Fire Department and multiple other mutual aid companies beginning to work multiple exterior handlines as this was going to be a defensive operation. Assistant Chief McCluskey, who was driving Tower 1, turned over operation of the truck to Firefighter Erik Johnson so Chief McCluskey could aid in fireground operations. Two Firefighters were ordered to the bucket of T-1 to begin utilizing the Master Stream to knock down the main seat of fire which was now really pushing heavy out of the second floor. Other Canton firefighters were utilized on the fireground elsewhere to aid in the extinguishment of the fire.

As most of the fire had been knocked down by the Master Stream, additional hotspots were seen but unable to be extinguised by either the Tower or the handlines on the ground as this was a very large structure. So, firefighters began to make entry into the home since the first floor was still very much intact and unharmed by the fire. Units were able to make entry to the second floor and open up the ceilings and walls to extinguish the numerous large hotspots of fire. After a few hours of battling the blaze, the fire was eventually extinguished and put under control. Even though there was close proximity to other homes, no extension to the other residences were noted due to the quick action of first arriving companies. No firefighter injuries were reported. At approximately 4:30 a.m Canton Units returned home to clean up and go back into service. A Great Job was done by all at the scene and should be commended for making a great stop on a large fire. The cause of the fire is still under the investigation of SLC Fire Investigators.

Units: Tower Ladder 1 (McCluskey) Engine 8 (Desantis)

Mutual Aid: Given to Dekalb Junction Fire
